Amar Sunar -7

Amar Sunar is an 11-year-old boy who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma about 10 months ago. He underwent 5 months of treatment which quickly ate up the 1 lakh (around $884 USD) provided once in a lifetime by the Nepali government to cancer patients, and all the resources the family had.

Amar’s dad moved to Saudi Arabia to work to pay off the debt incurred from his son’s previous treatment leaving his wife and three children back in the village of Nuwakot. Amar’s older sister and younger brother stayed in the village while his mother took Amar into Kathmandu last week to be treated at Civil Hospital after he recently relapsed.

Dr. Karun Shrestha contacted us last week and put us in touch with Amar’s doctor, Dr. Rachana Upreti, because they had just learned of TeamLeosKids through Harald Baldr’s video. The doctors had pooled their resources to help Amar get the testing he needed and still Amar’s mother finally sold all her jewelry last week to scrape together enough for this hospital stay.

During this time, Amar and his mom have been staying in the lowest price hotel they could find that probably lacks sanitary conditions.

Sunil talked to Amar’s dad in Saudi Arabia and found out that their family has been devastated to come to the point of not being able to afford further treatment on their own and their only option was to abandon treatment because of the high cost.

Harimaya visited Amar’s family in Kathmandu and assured them and his doctors that the Leonardo Edward Shrestha Foundation will provide an apartment for Amar, his mother and his two siblings so the family in Nepal can be together during this hard time; we will be providing nutritious groceries for them and have indicated that at least his initial treatment will be covered.
