We thank each and every one of you for being part of our Team Leo’s Kids! You have joined with folks all over the world in sharing our mission with friends and family. We are very grateful for your prayers, your encouragement to our Leo’s Kids, and your contributions. You have helped us so much to give hope to our Nepali children and their families in their struggles as they face childhood cancer. Please take a moment to enjoy this newsletter as we share many of our 2020 events, updates, and hopes, as you get to know our Leo’s Kids better.
In September this year, we were able to expand our Leo’s Kids Flats and other housing arrangements to include not just 6 Leo’s Kids and their families, but also an additional 5 children and their families. We moved the Leo’s Flats to a larger building with room for 11
children and their families. Our new building has separate sleeping apartments for each family and a large living room / game room and a large kitchen / dining room for families
to congregate. You have also helped the Foundation to equip the living room and dining rooms with flat screen tvs, games and art projects to share, and internet which helps so many stay in touch with families and friends, and with us here in the States. We also now have on staff a person who grocery shops and cooks healthful meals for all the families and keeps the apartments and shared spaces clean.
The average cost per family for housing rental is roughly $50 per month and groceries for each family are roughly $60 per month. This means that we are able to feed and house 11 families for about $1,200 US per month! The Foundation also provides transportation as needed for the children and families to get to and from treatment; and we continue to help families who need food and transportation assistance but are not living in Leo’s Kids Flats. We also continue to assist as able with medical expenses including treatment and testing like MRIs and CT scans.
One of the happiest surprises we have witnessed over these past few months is how the Leo’s Kids Flats families have created a wonderful community of support for each other.
What an incredible blessing this has been for the children and their parents!
During a crisis like a childhood cancer diagnosis, many families usually report feeling isolated, and especially during a global pandemic this isolation can be magnified. What an unexpected gift this community has been able to be for one another throughout these months.
We have seen sweet friendships form between our Leo’s Kids to the point where some of them feel like they’ve become more like family. The parents have been able to count on each other for emotional support and for helping each other maintain a sense of normalcy for their children.
In May we received our official letter of approval from the Internal Revenue Service saying the Leonardo Edward Shrestha Foundation is an approved 501(c)(3) charity. This means we have been approved for tax exempt status for all contributions made since we started on Nov 6, 2019. Because of this approval, we now have also been approved for lower PayPal fees of 2.2% + $0.30 per transaction (down from 2.9% + $0.30). We have also been vetted and are happy to have been approved by the National Christian Foundation. We now can receive donations several ways: via our website www.leonardoedwardshresthafoundation.org using PayPal; checks written directly to LESF at 2489 Rice Street, # 250, Roseville, MN 55113; and through Facebook, special fundraisers, and Smile.Amazon.com.
Leo’s wonderful and loving grandmother, Arlene Miskelly, passed away unexpectedly last spring on the 15th of April. She made the long journey to Minnesota on October 31 to be with Leo, her 12th grandchild, during his final moments on this earth and sat with us as we made plans to support families of children with cancer in Nepal just two days later. She was an incredibly loving, kind, funny, and compassionate woman who has left a huge hole in our hearts; we are grateful to know she and Leo are joyfully reunited and experiencing no pain. Dr. William Miskelly, Arlene’s husband and Leo’s grandfather, remains on our Board and honored his wife of 50 years by designating the Leonardo Edward Shrestha Foundation as one of the recipients of memorial gifts.
For just five days in July this summer, July 12th – July 16th, Harald Baldr hosted another Greek Giveaway Contest with a goal of raising $15,000 and a commitment that he would match up to $15,000.
Harald provided three items for the drawings. The first winner was Brett Baldwin from Saskatchewan, Canada, who won Leonidas’s Shield worth approximately 280 Euros. The second winner was Daniel Smith from England, who won Leonidas’s Helmet worth about 200 Euros. Our third and final winner was Tsering Kunga from California, USA, who won the statue of the Goddess of Knossos also worth about 200 Euros.
Our entire Team Leo’s Kids came through for this challenge and raised a total of $16,668 through our website on Paypal, Facebook fundraiser, and mailed in checks. Harald Baldr completely surprised us by matching every single dollar donated! So the total raised was an unbelievable $33,336! Thank you, Harald, and all Team Leo’s Kids!
On February 18, 2020, which would have been sweet Leo’s first birthday, we had our first Team Leo’s Kids Annual Benefit Fundraiser. We are so very thankful to each and every one of you who came to this first annual benefit! We especially appreciate Naveen Shrestha and Prabin Shrestha at Himalayan Restaurant for graciously hosting this event at no charge to the Leonardo Edward Shrestha Foundation. We had a total of 44 people attend at various times and additional supporters who were unable to attend donated to the event. Harald Baldr kindly held a live online chat with us as promised and encouraged us all with his continued support. Thank you so much for honoring our irreplaceable and unforgettable Leo in this way and for helping lighten the load for Leo’s Kids and their families. We love our “Home Team!” Contributions totalled about $2,700. Thank you!
On Saturday, March 15, we held our first Leo’s Kids Blood Drive and it turned out even better than we could have imagined. Even during the time of the coronavirus crisis, so many incredible people decided to come out and make blood donation a priority.
We are grateful to each of the 65 people who came out to donate blood, including several doctors, social workers, some of our family members, and many volunteers who worked to make the drive a success and were also blood donors. We want to especially acknowledge and thank the hard work of the Red Cross staff and nurses who brought their knowledge and skill to provide screening of donors, testing and processing of the donated blood, and the medical supplies. Many thanks also to: Kwality Banquet which provided the venue; Fruit Agro which provided fruit for the event; 3 doctors from Civil Hospital – Dr. Krishna Hamal, Dr. Karun Shrestha, and Dr. Rachana Upreti – who volunteered at the event and donated blood; Rajendra Shrestha, the president, and Bikram Shrestha, the coordinator with Chisapani Public Welfare Society; and Harimaya Shrestha from the Leonardo Edward Shrestha Foundation, who coordinated for over two months with all who successfully executed this blood drive. Their efforts, along with all the volunteers and donors, have made a difference in the lives of patients at this especially important time.
Leo’s dad, Sunil Shrestha, is planning to travel to Nepal later in December this year and early 2021. He plans to meet with Harald Baldr in Kathmandu and make plans for our 2021 fundraising. They will also be providing updates on each of our Leo’s Kids and the Leo’s Kids Flats – watch for exciting videos.
